چکیده

2014 At equilibrium thin films of symmetric diblock copolymers exhibit a morphology where the lamellar microdomains are oriented parallel to the external surfaces. Interference microscopy has been used to investigate this orientation which results in a quantization of the film thickness. Solution cast films of the symmetric polystyrene/polymethylmethacrylate P(S-b-MMA) diblock copolymers exhibit a single interference color characteristic of a film of uniform thickness with a free surface that is flat and smooth. Interference microscopy on these films annealed at 170°C for 24 hours and more shows the development of two distinct interference colors. The variations in the colors are discrete rather than continuous indicating step discontinuities in the film thickness with a height equal to one period of the underlying oriented lamellar multilayer. The free surface topology is such there are patches of one color spread across the surface on a uniform background, i.e., there are islands or depressions on the surface. The average size and spatial distribution of these islands or depressions are found to vary with annealing time ; the appearance of the free surface is reminiscent of a two-dimensional phase coarsening process. The time dependent change in the case of depressions is reported herein. J. Phys. Solvent-induced novel morphologies in diblock copolymer blend thin films.

We report the morphology and phase behaviors of blend thin films containing two polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) diblock copolymers with different blending compositions induced by a selective solvent for the PMMA block, which were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The neat asymmetric PS-b-PMMA diblock copolymers employed in this study, respectively coded as a...

Electric Field Induced Sphere-to-Cylinder Transition in Diblock Copolymer Thin Films

An electric field induced sphere-to-cylinder transition in thin films of asymmetric polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers was observed. In the absence of an applied electric field, thin films of the asymmetric diblock copolymer consisted of layers of spherical microdomains with poor in-plane long-range ordering. Under a ∼40V/μm applied electric field, hexagonally packed cyl...

Dewetting behavior of a block copolymer/homopolymer thin film on an immiscible homopolymer substrate.

Numerous previous studies have established that the addition of a microphase-ordered AB diblock copolymer to a thin homopolymer A (hA) film can slow, if not altogether prevent, film rupture and subsequent film dewetting on a hard substrate such as silica. However, only a few reports have examined comparable phenomena when the hA/AB blend resides on a soft B-selective surface, such as homopolyme...

Visualization of Individual Defect Mobility and Annihilation within Cylinder-Forming Diblock Copolymer Thin Films on Nanopatterned Substrates

We have tracked the mobility, approach, and annihilation of defects in cylinder-forming diblock copolymer thin films on nanopatterned substrates using high-temperature and in situ timelapse atomic force microscopy. This has been accomplished by visualizing two isolated defects and studying their approach and hence interactions. Here we used lithographed channels to template and orientationally ...
